STEP Chile Initiative Meeting
STEP is the global professional association for practitioners who specialize in family inheritance and succession planning. Their objective is to improve public understanding of the issues families face in this area and promote education and high professional standards among its members.
STEP members help families plan for their futures, from drafting a will to advising on issues concerning international families, protection of the vulnerable, family businesses and philanthropic giving. Full STEP members, known as TEPs, are internationally recognized as experts in their field, with proven qualifications and experience. The meeting, which gathered prestigious national lawyers and advisers, was an excellent opportunity to clarify doubts regarding investments in the United States, tax treatment in various situations and share good practices. Michael Ben-Jacob and Edward Vergara, both partners of Arnold & Porter, New York were in charge of the presentation.
Michael Ben-Jacob advises high net worth individuals, their families, family offices and related businesses regarding cross-border patrimonial preservation and planning based in the United States. His clients maintain connections with diverse jurisdictions, among them, Israel, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Switzerland, Brazil and the Virgin Islands of EE. UU. Likewise, it performs strategic planning in transfers within the United States, as well as issues of trust and wills, derived from foreign investment in US real estate and other assets, migration to and from the US.
Edward Vergara advises individuals and companies in investment and estate planning. Represents clients in a wide variety of international jurisdictions, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. They are fund managers, family businesses and entrepreneurs, with tax planning and patrimonial objectives that must be balanced with commercial considerations and the demands of external investors.
The activity ended with a cocktail where Cousiño Macul’s winemaker, Rosario Palma, guided the tasting of different vintages of Lota, the winery´s icon wine.
